Near the entrance to the New London Submarine Base is the Submarine Memorial. A short drive south you’ll come across the periscope & conning tower of the USS Flasher, a WWII submarine. A sister to the WWII Submarine Memorial–West in Los Angeles, this memorial features 52 granite stones representing the submarines lost in WWII and a Wall of Honor inscribed with the names of the 3,617 submariners who gave their lives in the Silent Service during WWII.

The USS Flasher served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, engaged in 6 war patrols and sank 21 Japanese ships. Launched less than a year after her keel was laid, the Flasher went on to serve in active duty for 3 years during which she was credited with sinking over 100,000 tons of enemy ship, the largest tonnage of any submarine in the war.

Also in the area: The Submarine Force Museum, located 3 miles north on the Thames River in Groton is the home of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered vessel. The museum, the only one operated by the US Navy, traces the development of the "Silent Service" from David Bushnell's Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War, to the latest Ohio and Virginia class submarines.

Norm’s Diner just down the road on Bridge St. is a classic 1954 Silk City, open 24 hours and a good motorcycle road food stop.

Or you can grab a bite to eat at the birthplace of the hamburger, Louis' Lunch in New Haven but don't ask for ketchup as they only offer cheese, onions and tomato to dress your burger.

If seafood is more your thing, Jimmie's in West Haven serves up the best fried clams you'll find in a state that exports more clams than any other seafood.

And if you can't decide between any of the above, try a meat & clam pizza at the home of what many call the world's best pizza, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napolentana.
