Standing tall at the eastern end of Memorial Park in the city’s south end, the Greek Temple Monument Memorial rises to honor the contributions of the state of New Jersey to the War, and those residents of Atlantic City who served in WWI. A 124-foot diameter faux Greek temple houses a bronze statue of Liberty surrounded by the victims of war. Around the top of the memorial are the major battles of WWI and inside, the dedication inscription.
"Liberty in Distress," portrays a nude Lady Liberty draped in a French flag and cradling a dying male soldier. A broken sword and other items of war including a mother and child litter the base of the statue, and Liberty is captured looking to the heavens and crying out in horror and sorrow.
There is a similar statue modeled after Liberty in Distress created for the French government for the 20th anniversary of the first battle of the Marne and is located at Varredes, France.
Also in the area: Lighthouse chasers will find New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse on South Rhode Island Ave.
Lined with shops, casinos, restaurants and more, the world famous Atlantic City Boardwalk will provide a distraction from the road or a tasty bite to eat before riding on.
