Standing in the middle of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, in the Wharton State Forest is a memorial to Captain Emilio Carranza Rodriguez. In the early days of aviation, Captain Carranza was returning to Mexico from New York where he had been on a goodwill mission when he crashed amongst the pines in 1928. His flight from Mexico City to New York was the longest flight flown by a Mexican aviator, earning him the nickname “Lindbergh of Mexico” and was regarded by Americans and Mexicans alike as an ambassador of peace, goodwill and friendship.
After his death, schoolchildren throughout Mexico donated their pennies to raise a monument to his memory. Quarried from stones representing every state in Mexico, the memorial features the Aztec eagle as a symbol of Mexican identity, pride, leadership and dignity. The descending eagle and inscribed footprints mark Carranza's tragic descent and final "walk" on earth.
Despite its location in the wilds of the Pine Barrens, the monument is on a paved road and easily reached on a motorcycle.
Also in the area: The Pine Barrens are a million acres of undeveloped wilderness in the heart of New Jersey, site of the largest untapped aquifer east of the Mississippi with winding roads and peaceful woods perfect for riding including hundreds of miles of dirt roads.
