This monument was dedicated in 1960 to the submarine USS Barbel and her crew who were lost off the cost of Palawan. The Balao-class submarine was sunk by the Japanese on the 4th of February 1945, less than three months after being put into service. During its short duty, the Barbel sank six Japanese ships during four patrols, and received three battle stars for her World War II service.

Veterans from WWII are dying at the rate of 850 per day. The members of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII, a congressionally chartered Veterans Organization, have dedicated memorials to all fifty-two boats lost in WWII. As a result of their efforts, the submarines and their crews will always be remembered as being “on Eternal Patrol.”

Also in the area: Veterans Park at 2nd and Kimball in Casper. A memorial panel recognizes veterans of Desert Shield, The Cold War, Lebanon, Grenada and Panama. A Women's Role in the Service Memorial was added in 2010. Additional monuments recognize all wars from this and the last century.
