This remarkable bronze of an infantryman placing his buddy's dog tags on a solitary cross adorned with a helmet, steel pot, and rifle is reminiscent of locations throughout Europe where, during World War II, the fallen were buried on foreign shores. Graves located throughout the World War II European theater are marked with white crosses or stars. World War II was the last war where the bodies of soldiers were buried on foreign soil.
Of special significance, the bronze statue was created by local sculptor John Phelps. John's son, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, modeled for the memorial and was killed in Iraq six months after his father began work on the sculpture.
Also in the area: Sinks Canyon State Park, just seven miles outside of town. At Sinks Canyon State Park, you can see a river disappear into the side of a mountain.
