This memorial contains several full relief bronze statues depicting daily life of the soldiers, nurses and POWs during the Vietnam war. The granite
panels contain 5,822 names of Californians, arranged by home town.
B.T.Collins, a well-known figure in California government (and former Special Forces Captain, who lost a leg and an arm in Vietnam), was a major driving force in the movement to get the memorial built with $2.5 million in donations. No taxpayer dollars were used.
On Memorial Day weekend, veterans from all branches of service and their families, show up for the ceremonies, including a moving "Table for One" ceremony honoring POW-MIAs. |
