On Labor Day, September 2, 1935, Hurricane Ismaralda, the “Great Hurricane,” slammed into the Florida Keys with sustained 200 mile-per-hour winds for more than 24 hours. 100s of WWI veterans that were working on the construction of US Highway 1 were killed. They were part of the Works Progress Administration, the government-sponsored employment program, a product of the Great Depression.
Bonus stops: Manny and Isa's Kitchen, 1/2 block north of the memorial, famous for their Key Lime Pie. And snap a photo of the giant lobster at MM87. |
