Camp Fannin was active from 1943 to 1946, as an Army Infantryman Replacement Center. They trained over 200,000 soldiers here who were sent into both theatres of World War II, and using the conservative 2.4% mortality rate, over 5,600 of the recruits lost their lives and twice that wounded. Even with its limited lifespan, Camp Fannin had a huge economic and emotional impact on this small town that is still felt today.
Riders can take a self-guided tour of the original 14,000-acre camp. Guides may be obtained at the nearby University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler Hospital Information Desk. Regimental markers and site locations for various training exercise areas are indentified in the guide.
Bonus stop: Visit the award-winning Stanleys Pit BBQ in Tyler. Closed Sundays. Get there early because like all good BBQ joints, they can run out of the good stuff. |
