This memorial is a tribute to the Pony Express riders of Salt Lake City. Salt Lake was the major mid-point in the route starting in St. Joseph, Missouri and ending in Sacramento, California. The Pony Express service lasted only 18 months, interrupted by the Civil War and replaced by the invention of the telegraph, but the lore of the bravery and stamina of the riders will last forever as a part of the American Frontier West.

The double-life size statue shows an older rider with his exhausted horse, having just thrown the mailbag onto another fresh horse with a younger rider, still off-balance in the saddle as he speeds away.

The weight of the mail (20 pounds), water, food, a Bible, the horn for alerting the next station to have the next horse ready, and two guns of the riders choice, couldn’t exceed 40 pounds. The riders themselves couldn’t exceed 125 pounds. Waystations were spaced every 10 miles. Each rider rode about 75 miles a day.

The Pony Express Riders oath:
“While I am the employ of A. Majors, I agree not use profane language, not to get drunk, not to gamble, not to treat animals cruelly and not to do anything else that is incompatible with the conduct of a gentleman. And I agree, if I violate any of the above conditions, to accept my discharge without any pay for my services.”

Bonus stops: The "This is the Place!" monument, named after Brigham Young's famous statement in 1847, commanding Mormon pioneers to settle in the Salt Lake Valley. Also, take a ride up Emigration Canyon to Ruth's Diner, featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives."
