In the northeast corner of the state, you will find the Hopi and Navajo nations. For all the problems these proud people have had with the United States, they have been patriotic and faithful when our country needed them most.
During the early part of World War II, the Japanese were not only breaking every American code, they were also successful at sending false communications, and would then ambush our troops.
But in 1942, the adult son of a missionary to the Navajo people proposed to the government his idea for an unbreakable code. The first 29 Navajo men to enlist were between the ages of 15 and 35 and created the original code. Despite the fact that they were in every Marine Corps assault team from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific, they were not allowed a hero’s welcome home. The program was classified until 1968. Five finally received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2001.
Visit the Burger King Restaurant, pictured above, in Kayenta. Whatever fine cuisine you decide to grab there, read up on the Code Talkers and get a picture of the display.
