Much History has been made in Yuma. This is due in a large part to the fact that Yuma was the safest place to cross the Colorado River and built up around that crossing. With this much history, you might want to consider starting or ending your tour here.

Featured above is the Yuma Armed Forces Park, honoring veterans of all services from any time period, alive or dead. There are plaques throughout the park with the names, dates of service and branch insignia. You will also find a Blue Star for the Blue Star Highway project.

Yuma is called the sunniest city in the US and local merchants are part of a program where hotel guests eat free if it’s a cloudy day. Check it out here. But be warned, Yuma has the highest average temperature in all of Arizona.

While in the area, consider visiting the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds, one of the largest military testing sites in the western world. The YPG Heritage Center Military Museum is open M-F, 10-4, or by appointment, free admission.

You can also visit the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, featured in the movie, “3:10 to Yuma,” and a popular attraction and museum well worth the $5 entrance fee. Open year-round, 8am-5pm. People from Yuma are proud of their prison background, with the local high schoolers called the “Yuma Criminals.”
