On the northern slopes of Mt. Shasta, there are several sculptures including POW-MIA recognition, battlefield nurses, Huey helicopters and more. There is also a granite memorial wall with names of local area veterans living and deceased. A unique labyrinth for
contemplation, and many small impromptu memorials set among the rocks and trees. Many people make annual pilgrimages to this popular memorial.
The POW-MIA sculpture pictured above, contains many mementoes, including POW-MIA bracelets, cigarettes, cans of beer and other items whose significance is known only to their contributors.
Six years ago, ToH rider Mark Kratz started a tradition of leaving a small plastic army soldier, so if you happen to bring one along you can add to the collection. Try to take a photo of them together, knowing that they came from other Tour of Honor riders.
NOTE: Gravel is present. If uncomfortable on gravel, you can leave the bike in the parking lot near the road and walk in, approx. 200 yards.
Also in the area: For some decent American diner food, try the Hi-Lo Cafe, at 88 S Weed Blvd. in Weed. Pick up a kitschy "Weed" related souvenir there.... where else can you get a “Weed Police” watch cap?
If you like outstanding motorcycle roads, there are plenty to choose from between I-5 and the coast, including Hwy. 36, Hwy. 299, and several others.
Rick Mayer, local motorcycle saddle maker, says: “Platina Road is my favorite riding spot in the country, and considering all the roads I have ridden that says a lot. 28 miles, 200+ turns, 4000' elevation change between Ono (pick up a great hamburger at the Ono Store) and Platina (best corned beef hash and eggs). Most of the time I don't see a single car for 28 miles.”
Near the town of Ono is the town of Igo, home of the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, also worth a visit. |
