Located on the grounds of the Connecticut Fire Academy training grounds, this monument honors Connecticut firefighters who have died in the line of duty. A state that primarily relies on volunteer fire departments to provide fire protection services in most towns, this monument is a special tribute to those citizens who picked up a hose or fire axe to help their neighbors.
The first memorial to fallen firefighters in Connecticut, it is placed on a patio the shape of the fire fighters symbol, the Maltese Cross and features a granite carving of four fire fighters in action surrounded by plaques engraved with the names of these citizen heroes.
Also in the area: Just down the road is the New England Air Museum, the region’s largest aviation museum and home to one of the world’s most significant collections of aviation artifacts and research libraries. Among other exhibits are the oldest surviving aircraft in the United States (a balloon basket from 1870), the oldest Connecticut built aircraft and helicopters as well as the last surviving four engine American flying boat in the world.
