This multi-faceted memorial for Kearney County veterans of all wars from the Civil War through Vietnam, was originally dedicated in 1954 with a large brick obelisk that once held an eternal flame. Since then, several monuments for different wars have been added, along with flagpoles and markers for different branches of service.
There is a nicely restored “M60 Patton” tank as part of the memorial. The popular 105mm M60 was Chrysler-built in Detroit between 1960 and 1987, and served in a number of Cold War battles and Desert Storm. It is still being used today by many countries, mainly in Turkey, Egypt and Israel. It was used by the U.S. until the M1 Abrams took over.
This particular M60 is fitted with a bulldozer kit for breaching duties. It’s engine is a Continental twin-turbocharged V-12 diesel generating 750 horsepower.
