Located on the grounds of Mt. Greylock State Reservation, the state’s highest point with an elevation of 3,491 feet, the War Memorial Beacon (also known as the Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower) was originally built in 1932 to honor the state’s veterans of WWI. It now stands in tribute to “courage, endurance, loyalty and self-sacrifice, wherever these qualities have been shown, by the state’s men and women in the uniform of the state or nation.”
Important: The Memorial, and nearby Bascom Lodge, a rustic lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps is typically only open from mid-May through November when snow is off the roadways. If wanting to visit before mid-May, it's advisable to call ahead for road conditions: 413-499-4262.
Also in the area: Bascom Lodge’s Sunset Beverage Hour (Wed-Sun, 5-7pm) is a great way to sit & sip a beverage watching the sun set behind Mt. Greylock.
Nearby you will find Stockbridge Massachusetts, home to the Guthrie Center (and the town that inspired his classic Alice’s Restaurant) and the scenic Berkshires where you’ll find scenic riding as good as it gets in New England (click here for tour suggestions).
