Battleship Cove in Fall River Massachusetts is home to a variety of living memorials to the men and women of the armed forces of the United States. Included in the park is the battleship USS Massachusetts (Big Mamie) housing a vast museum of WWII era service (the ship fired both the first & last 16” projectiles of the war in Africa and Japan), the Cold War destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Submarine Lionfish and Hiddensee Soviet missile corvette.
For this tour though, the objective is the National PT Boat Museum. From Normandy to the islands of the Pacific Theater, these plywood boats were the most heavily armed vessels (by relative weight) in the US Navy. The PT boat is the precursor for other light, fast, heavily armed boats like the Hiddensee. The museum tells the story of the development and missions of the PT Boats as well as serving as the base for restoration of these rare remainders of the PT Boat fleet (most were burned to the waterline due to the expense of returning them from overseas).
Also in the area: Next door is the Carousel of Fall River, an operating historical Carousel – go for a ride on a different kind of iron horse. Also down the street is the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum and the Marine Museum at Fall River. The Waterstreet Café provides food & drink for the body (and sometimes live music) before you hit the road again.
