The Pilgrim Monument commemorates the first landfall of the Mayflower in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor. Popular lore has Plymouth, Massachusetts as the “landing site” of the Pilgrims, but they spent more than a month exploring Cape Cod before heading further south for a more sheltered location.

The Pilgrims had pledged not to step on land before they completed writing and signing the Mayflower Compact which was the governing document for the first democratic society in America. The memorial and plaque on Bradford St. commemorates these people and their courage in making their arduous journey. The monument on the hill is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States and can be climbed to the top.

Also in the area: A hike to the top of the monument (fee applies) and a visit to the maritime museum at the monument’s base is a tourist favorite. While in the area, a visit to the Highland Light and Historical Society in Truro includes a view into the life of light keepers and even the “wreckers” who risked their lives to save shipwrecked passengers & salvage off the coast. Of course, Provincetown itself is the home of a very eclectic population and people watching, shopping or dining are all recommended.

Chowdah. Synonymous with New England, the best classic clam chowder is made in Massachusetts and while on the tour you'll find none better than at the Lobster Pot in Provincetown while overlooking the harbor or people watching the tourists and eccentric residents.

If the summer crowds make you want to keep moving out of P-Town, a stop at Arnold's in Eastham on the way off Cape is a mid-Cape tradition with a gallon sized container of chowder available for takeout in addition to the more rider-friendly cups and bowls.
