This monument to the memory of the men of Massachusetts who died in the Korean War overlooks Boston Harbor and provides a very stirring face of the soldiers of all five branches of service which are represented by the twenty names inscribed on the monument. The young soldier’s face foreshadows the statues flanking the Wall in the National Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC and is an early example of the realism style in monuments which has become the standard in the past 20 years

Also in the area: While on Castle Island, a tour of Fort Independence is well worth a stop. This fort helped protect Boston during the War of 1812 and was the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe’s story, The Cask of Amontillado based on the local story of an officer walled up in its dungeon (Poe served at Castle Island when he was in the Army).

The Medal of Honor Park is only a short ride down East Broadway into Boston proper.

While in Boston, a day or more can be consumed by walking the Freedom Trail, checking out the Bunker Hill Monument, Boston Common (and nearby Bull & Finch Tavern, the inspiration for TV’s “Cheers”) and the food and shopping found at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
