On Missouri State Highway 224 in Lexington MO ask anyone where the old Missouri River Bridge was. Take 224 west from the top of the bluff in downtown Lexington.
This Memorial was built in 1925 to honor World War I veterans. Later, veterans’ names from World War II, Korea and Vietnam were added. It sits in a beautiful location on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River, where a bridge used to be, built in 1924. The bridge was razed a few years ago but the turnout is still there making the memorial an easy place to stop. The steps go up to the very top of the bluff and are level with the town of Lexington.
On a personal note, state sponsor Bob Rippy’s father played in a Boys Band at the bridge dedication.
Also in the area: Lexington was the sight of one of key battles of the Civil War in Missouri. There is a Battlefield Park where you can still see the trenches. Also in the courthouse is a replica of a cannon ball shot into one of the columns.
