At the White Sands Missile Range Museum you can trace the origin of America's missile and space activity, find out how the atomic age began, and learn about the accomplishments of scientists like Dr. Wernher von Braun and Dr. Clyde Tombaugh. Displays also include the prehistoric cultures and the rip-roaring Old West of southern New Mexico.
Outside the museum is a missile park displaying a variety of missiles and rockets tested at White Sands. These include everything from the WAC Corporal and Loon (U.S. version of the V-1) to a Pershing II and Patriot. More than 50 static displays are featured.
The Pershing II is a two-stage, surface-to-surface missile sometimes credited with helping win the Cold War. It was capable of being fired from Boise, Idaho and hitting an area the size of this missile display. The maneuvering warhead guided itself to the target by making radar images of the terrain below and comparing them with stored terrain maps of the target area. Deployment was stopped by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 1987.
The missile park is open from dawn to dusk daily.
The White Sands Missile Range Museum is dedicated to collect, house, catalogue, preserve, display, and maintain the history of White Sands Missile Range. It is open 0800-1600 Monday-Friday and 1000-1500 Saturday-Sunday. Closed holidays. Admission is free.
