On September 11, 2001, upon hearing the chilling announcements of the World Trade Center attacks, citizens of Las Vegas started placing flowers, trinkets, toys, poems, and other mementoes around the fountain at the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard. It became a shrine, and in the months that followed, people gathered here, reflecting and sharing in the grief with others.

Since that time, the spontaneous and makeshift memorials have been encased in glass along the sidewalk.
