The Pentagon Memorial consists of 184 cantilevered stainless steel benches,  each inscribed with the name of a victim here on September 11, 2001. The benches are arranged in a timeline based on the ages of the victims, and oriented in opposite directions, depending whether the victim was on American Airlines Flight 77 or inside the Pentagon.

The two-acre site is in front of where the plane struck the building and you can make out where the damaged section was repaired. Workers hastily rebuilt the structure and offices were occupied one year to the day, after the terrorist attack. The memorial is especially striking at night when the benches are lit from underneath and reflected in pools of water. The memorial is open 24/7. NOTE: Photography is prohibited on the Pentagon Reservation except inside the memorial area.

Internet parking tip: “Those driving to the memorial can park for a fee at the Fashion Centre mall at Pentagon City. The Pentagon parking lots are generally off limits to the public, though the Hayes Street lot is usually available to visitors on nights and weekends.”
