The location of the National D-Day Memorial was selected not only because of the scenic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but because Bedford had suffered the most losses per capita on June 6, 1944. Bedford, with a population of only 3200, was one of 11 Virginia communities who provided a company of soldiers to the 29th Infantry Division in the National Guard. 30 of Bedford’s soldiers landed on Omaha Beach and by the end of the day 19 were dead.
The memorial sits on 88 acres and consists of several elements, the most compelling is a walkway that places visitors in the heart of the action where one can almost feel the terror of the advancing soldiers. Brave men they were.
