In spite of the 2007 massacre that left 32 students dead and 25 injured, Virginia Tech is a proud school with a long-standing dedication to military principles. Partly because of it’s strong Corps of Cadets program, VTech has provided seven graduates who later earned the Medal of Honor.
There have been 3,408 Medal of Honor recipients since it’s inception during the Civil War. It is the highest military award given by the U.S. government, voted by Congress and presented, most often posthumously, by the President. It is the only “neck order” military award and provides many deserved privileges and courtesies to living recipients, and to families of deceased recipients.
There has been only one pair of brothers who received the award, both graduates of Virginia Tech. Flanking the altar-shaped Medal of Honor Memorial are 8 tall pillars with names of 425 Virginia Tech students who have died in combat since World War I. |
