Behind this handsome colonial minuteman stands a 306’ limestone monument, erected on the site of a weapons storehouse and the tallest structure in Vermont. It was built to commemorate the colonial victory over General Burgoyne on August 16, 1777. Untrained troops under the command of then Continental Colonel John Stark defeated Burgoyne’s best trained and equipped troops attempting to capture the armory. With most of his troops killed, captured or wounded, Burgoyne’s assault on Albany was forestalled and without the captured supplies, was forced to surrender his remaining 8,000 troops at the Battle of Saratoga on October 7, 1777.

Beginning April 21, from 0930-1730, an elevator takes visitors to the observation deck two-thirds of the way up the monument where you can see New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Looking west, the battlefield itself is visible about 6 miles away in New York.

The wooden cutout of the Colonial Militiaman is placed on the grounds seasonally but if not available, the bronze statue of General Stark is perfectly situated for a rally flag picture.

Also in the area: The Bennington Museum is a short drive down W. Main St (Rt 9) and the Four Chimneys Inn and Restaurant offers a historic site for lunch or an overnight stay. The Apple Barn south of town on Rt 7 offers apples, fresh cider, hot pies and Vermont ketchup (maple syrup) for consumption or a souvenir.
