Located at the Vermont Veterans Militia Museum and Library on the grounds of the Vermont National Guard’s Camp Johnson (Joint Forces Headquarters for the Vermont National Guard), the Fallen Heroes monument was raised in honor of the 11 Vermont National Guardsmen who lost their lives in Iraq. Although one of the smallest states, Vermont had the highest per-capita death rate in Iraq when the monument was erected in 2008.

NOTE: We've received word that this site is now OFF LIMITS except for active duty military. This is an unfortunate turn of events that the American public can't pay respects to Fallen Heroes here and hopefully they'll either relax the rules or move the memorial off-base. Until that happens, take a photo of your flag with the Vermont Veterans Militia Museum and Library sign.

Also in the area: Located at the entrance to Camp Johnson, the museum itself is open Tues–Thurs from 10-3 (free admission) and is a must-do stop. Featuring exhibits and displays going back to the 18th century, the museum includes a one-of-a-kind Sheridan’s Ride Civil War painting which, when completed in 1900, was the largest oil painting in North America at 17’ by 28’. Uniforms, weaponry (including a captured WWI German cannon) and a variety of aircraft are on exhibit.

While in Colchester, the home of New England’s favorite “cup-o-joe” is on Gauthier Dr. at the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. A bit south in Burlington you’ll find everything from Oz’s Winged Monkeys (atop Main Street Landing) to two(!) monuments to Champy the Lake Champlain “Sea Monster.”

And just a half hour away on Rt 100 in Waterbury, you’ll want to take the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour (and Flavor Graveyard). Vermont also produces a quarter of the country's maple syrup and together they make a delicious summer delight.
