The Calhoun County Commission worked with local veterans groups to create an all wars memorial for Alabama veterans killed in action since WWI. The names of those passed are listed by war on separate granite or stone tablets. There is an Alabama-shaped reflecting pool that fronts an area with an impressive 36-foot long wall of black Zimbabwe granite. Engraved on it are 1,028 names of those Alabama veterans lost in Vietnam.

Impressive, too, are the two semi-circular walls and other stones engraved with names of Alabama veterans lost in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Centennial Memorial Park holds high the sacrifice of over 10,500 Alabamians.

Also in the area: Anniston is located between two great areas for two-wheel travel. To the south and east is the Talladega National Forest where AL281 and AL49 twist up to Mt Cheaha, the tallest point in the state.

To the north above Gadsden and west of Fort Payne is the Little River Canyon area with lakes filled by the Tennessee River. Good riding is to be had on these smaller, less congested roads.
