The park is a unique military attraction and an unforgettable adventure with a number of exhibits and memorials on the grounds. An Air Force F4 Phantom marks the entrance which is open every day except Christmas. For a $6 entry fee there are tanks, artillery pieces, aircraft, a submarine, and the stately South Dakota-class battleship, the USS Alabama. For anyone with an interest in military history, allow ample time to take in the sights.
Hours of operations are 8:00AM to 6:00PM (April through September), 8:00AM to 5:00PM (October through March). The last ticket is sold one hour prior to closing.
Also in the area: Fort Blakely Park (34745 State Hwy. 225), site of the siege of Fort Blakely, the last battle of the Civil War. At the time, General Robert E. Lee had already surrendered the Confederacy to Union Forces. Without knowledge of the war’s end though, over 16,000 Union troops emerged from siege trenches and rifle pits to attack 4,000 Confederates along a three mile front. The battlefield has been undisturbed for over 148 years and still looks much like it did the day of the battle.
The park is also a nature preserve and has several secluded wilderness campsites if you’d like to stay the night. The park is open from 9AM to dusk, seven days a week.
