Smaller markers list modern era wars and are part of a larger memorial to Alabama veterans of all of America's wars. At one time, there were statues on the marble pedestals in the Veteran’s Courtyard but vandalism took its toll. American Legion members removed the remains of the statues and put up the planters that have flowers during the growing season. The statues were then taken to an area down by the state capitol. One can still take time to pause and reflect as they read the words on the base of the pedestals. It’s interesting that those who did the damage have freedom because of the sacrifices made by the veterans being honored.

Although no hours are listed for the American Legion building, daytime visits during the week would likely allow access to all the monuments and any displays inside the headquarters building. Although the facility is closed weekends, access to the memorial can be gained from the parking lot behind the building.

Also in the area: A few blocks away on Capitol Hill stands the 85-foot tall Confederate Monument. This monument commemorates the sacrifice of 122,000(!) Alabamians who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Unlike all other Civil War memorials, this one stands adjacent to the Alabama state capitol building in the Cradle of the Confederacy. “There a nation was born, and there let its grave be hallowed,” wrote the revered “Mrs. Judge Bibb,” better known as “Aunt Sophie” to the thousands of suffering soldiers her hospital in Montgomery served during the war. The monument can be viewed any time, day or night.
