This beautiful sculpture is a monument to William "Bucky" O’Neill and Troop A of the Rough Riders. Bucky reported on the famous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone for the local paper, the “Tombstone Epitaph,” before he headed to Prescott. Over time he became a local hero and legend, and served as judge, sheriff, and mayor before the Spanish-American war broke out in 1898. On July 1, Captain O’Neill and his troops were pinned down by the Spaniards who held the high ground as they rained gunfire down from the top of Kettle Hill. One of the plaques on the boulder lists the roster of Troop A.

While here, spend time walking around the square and visit the other memorials. Across Montezuma from the courthouse is a Harley Davidson shop and the historic Hotel St. Michael.
