SSG Vasquez was born January 26, 1979, here in the heart of the nation's melon country. He entered the Army in 1997 and became a Platoon Sergeant in Lightning Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado.

He was deployed two times to Iraq and received many awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

SSG Vasquez died in Baghdad, Iraq, when in IED detonated near his military vehicle.

A plaque reads, "SSG Justin Lee Vasquez will be remembered for the morale he brought to the unit, for his love of his family, his wife and son, and his dedication to his work."
