Open daily (except Tuesdays) from 9-5, the Submarine Force Museum, located at the Naval Submarine Base New London on the Thames River, is free to the public and maintains the world's finest collection of submarines and related displays. It is the only submarine museum operated by the United States Navy and is the primary repository for artifacts, documents and photographs relating to U.S. Submarine Force history. The museum traces the development of the "Silent Service" from David Bushnell's Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War, to the Ohio and Virginia class submarines.

Among the submarines on display are the Italian "Maiale" mini-sub used to transport frogmen into a harbor or anchorage occupied by enemy ships, the Japanese "Type A" two-man mini-sub, the unique Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) used for clandestine ops by Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), aka "SEALs" (Sea-Air-Land) and the world’s first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, which is open for self-guided tours.

Also in the area: The Submariners Memorial (East) is located 3 miles south on the shores of Long Island Sound and home of the USS Flasher’s conning tower and memorial to the 52 submarines lost in WWII and the 3,617 submariners who gave their lives in the Silent Service.

Norm’s Diner, just down the road on Bridge St., is a classic 1954 Silk City, open 24 hours and a perfect motorcycle road food stop.

Or you can grab a bite to eat at the birthplace of the hamburger, Louis' Lunch in New Haven but don't ask for ketchup as they only offer cheese, onions and tomato to dress your burger.

If seafood is more your thing, Jimmie's in West Haven serves up the best fried clams you'll find in a state that exports more clams than any other seafood.

And if you can't decide between any of the above, try a meat & clam pizza at the home of what many call the world's best pizza, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napolentana
