Similar to the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, Connecticut’s version is the official National Iwo Jima Memorial and although similar is not a copy. The statue was patterned after Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photograph of the Marine capture of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima in 1945.
Inscribed on the base surrounding the memorial are the names of 100 Connecticut men who gave their lives during the battle for the island.
Near the base are two granite monuments honoring military chaplains and the combat medical corps. The only major monument to the medical corps, this monument honors the 738 medical corpsmen and 23 doctors killed or wounded during the battle of Iwo Jima.
Also in the area: For something a little different, take a short ride to the Avery Soda Company in New Britain. Over 35 flavors and made with cane sugar. If you arrive on bottling day at this 100 year old soda factory, the oldest in New England, your tour can include making your own soda (you can even take home 3 bottles!).
Lake Compounce is America’s oldest continuously operating amusement park, next to the continent’s tallest (38 story) elevator test tower skyscraper in Bristol. The park has two wooden coasters, one dating back to 1927, and another voted "World's #1 Wooden Coaster" by amusement park associations and coaster enthusiasts.
