Flanked by the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the 3 Soldiers Monument, the Women’s Memorial is a tribute to all women who served in the Vietnam War. Most were nurses in various branches of the armed services and this memorial features three caring for a wounded soldier. Serving as a reminder both of the importance of the role they played during the war and the hope they provided for the wounded; the three nurses, Hope, Faith and Charity are emblematic of the 265,000 who served during the war, 11,000 of them in Vietnam itself. All volunteers.
Because of the guerilla tactics of the North Vietnamese, many women were in the middle of combat zones. There was no front, no such thing as being stationed safely behind the lines. The names of eight are inscribed in the Wall nearby, having died in Vietnam.
An unknown number of civilian women also served in Vietnam as working for the Red Cross, the USO, Catholic Relief Services and other humanitarian organizations. Like their military counterparts, many of these women were wounded in the crossfire. More than 50 civilian American women died in Vietnam. This memorial is for them as well.
Also in the area: Take a stroll east towards the WWII Memorial and around the north side of Constitution Gardens Pond, cross the bridge to the island and picnic near the memorial to the Signers of the Declaration of Independence (GPS 38.89108,-77.04286).
