In May 2010, Delaware became the last state in the country to erect a monument to honor its fallen police officers. Paying tribute to all law enforcement officers in the state of Delaware who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their fellow citizens, the memorial lists 40 officers who have lost their lives since 1893.
Standing on the grounds of the Legislative Mall in front of the state capitol, the memorial stands as a constant reminder of the danger faced by police officers daily as well as the devotion, valor and honor they bring to their work. When it was originally erected there were 36 names on the wall. Since then four others have joined their brothers in sacrifice.
In the words of Vivian Eney Cross, the widow of a police officer killed in the line of duty, the memorial wall is inscribed:
"It is not how these officers died that made them heroes,
it is how they lived."
Also in the area: Nearby Dover AFB is home to the Air Mobility Museum which highlights military aviation through exhibits and a collection of aircraft on display.
Of course, the Monster Mile is a must stop for NASCAR fans!
