Shortly after WWII, a “Friendship Train” was sent in 1947 from the United States to Europe. Travelling first from Los Angeles it wound its way through America collecting food donations for the people of France and Italy. It provided desperately needed assistance in the aftermath of World War II, to the people still suffering the effects of war.
Originally expected to collect 80 train car loads of food, the train ultimately collected over 700 cars of food, clothing, and fuel.
In 1949, France responded with “The Merci Train” was composed of 49 “Forty and Eight” boxcars that had been used throughout Europe to transport either 40 men or eight horses during WWI and WWII. The boxcars, one for each state, were filled with "gifts of gratitude" from the French and Italian people in honor of American generosity and the liberation of Europe. Donations from the Merci Train came from over six million Europeans in the form of dolls, statues, clothes, ornamental objects and furniture. Forty-three remain.
