Fort Benning has been the home of Army Infantry since 1918. Starting with Basic Training, raw recruits are trained to be soldiers and then receive advanced infantry training here at Fort Benning. The Army's airborne school is here and so is the Army's Ranger School.
Located outside the entry gate to Ft. Benning, is the recently opened National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center. The museum opened in 2009 and includes informative historical displays, an IMAX Theater, and Combat Simulators which will give you a taste of the training soldiers receive at Fort Benning. There is plenty to see and do here, so try to spend at least a couple of hours visiting the museum. You'll be glad you did!
Museum hours: 0900-1700 Tuesday-Saturday. 1100-1700 Sunday. Closed Mondays. The Infantry Soldier statue is located outside the museum, so you should be able to access it during off-hours.
Also in the area: Ranger Joe's is a military and law enforcement supply store open to the public. It's a favorite place to browse and shop for all things military. Not a surplus store, everything is first rate and up to date.
