This museum is dedicated to the role of the Eighth Air Force during WWII. The “Mighty Eighth” was organized in Savannah in 1942 and later deployed to England where it's B-17s and B-24s participated in the strategic bombardment of Nazi Germany. Escorting the bombers into Germany were squadrons of Eighth Air Force P-51, P-38 and P-47 fighter aircraft.
The “Mighty Eighth” became part of the newly-formed U.S. Air Force in 1947 when the Air Force separated from the Army to become it's own independent branch of the military. Still in existence, the Eighth Air Force has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Inside the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum you will find exhibits on the rise of Nazi Germany, what it was like to fly a B-17 and B-24, POW experiences, and numerous personal items donated to the museum. There is also a B-17 Flying Fortress, the “City of Savannah.” This is an excellent museum and well worth planning a couple of hours to visit. You'll be glad you did!
Museum hours: Seven days a week 0900-1700, but the F-4 above, next to the parking area, should be accessible during non-business hours.
McDonnell Aircraft designed and built the F-4 Phantom in the early 60's. It became one of the most successful fighters ever built and was flown by the United States Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps as well as many foreign countries. In Vietnam, the F-4 fulfilled both fighter and fighter-bomber roles, scoring 277 aerial combat victories. The aircraft weighed 38,352 pounds with a max bomb load of 16,000 pounds. At 40,000 feet the F-4 was capable of flying at over 1,400 mph.
Also in the area: Savannah is one of the most picturesque cities in the South. In and around the waterfront there are so many hotels/motels/restaurants to choose from that you can surely find one to your liking.Suffice it to say, whatever your lodging and restaurant preference, you'll find it here along the Savannah waterfront, from fast food to fine dining, making it a good overnight choice.
