Located in the Centerville section of Barnstable on Massachusett’s historic Cape Cod, the town green is home to several veterans memorials including one of the oldest Civil War monuments in Massachusetts dating to July 1866.
Also in the park are monuments to Centerville’s veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. (WWI veterans are named on a plaque on the Civil War memorial.)
Inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial, reflecting a time when the country was divided over its involvement in the war is this:
In memory of all Vietnam Veterans
This memorial was erected in memory of the young individuals who went to war as kids and lost their youthful dreams, and some their lives, for a cause – freedom and honor – and came back as men with the horrors of war distilled in every fiber of their being and were never given the respect and honor they so dearly deserved from the public or United States government.
Also in the area: The Cape is the site of the National Seashore beaches, hundreds (thousands?) of shops and restaurants. At its northernmost tip is the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, and a memorial to the Pilgrims who came to this country in search of freedom.
