Erected in 1925 in honor of Gloucester fishermen this larger than life statue of a fisherman on the deck of his boat overlooks Gloucester Harbor and serves as a cenotaph sculpture – an empty tomb to honor those whose remains are interred elsewhere.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the statue has become synonymous with Gloucester and was raised to commemorate the thousands of fishermen lost at sea in the first 300 years of Gloucester’s history. Today it has become a symbol of honor and remembrance for all fishermen who never returned to their homes.

Also in the area: Midway between Boston and Portsmouth, Gloucester has a long history with the sea and is worth a stop, even an overnight. Just down the road from the Fisherman’s Memorial at the easternmost point of Stage Fort Park is the Fisherman’s Wives Memorial.

The visitor center on Hough Ave. in the park can provide a list of countless ways to wile away a warm summer day, including a sail on the Schooner Thomas E Lannon, ordering chowda at Causeway Restaurant, or maybe raising a pint at the Cape Ann Brewing Co.
