Erected in 1895, the Newsboy Statue and Fountain pays tribute to those integral to the newspaper industry – the children who sold newspapers and helped ensure that what was published was able to be read, on a timely basis, preserving the relevance of the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
The statue honors the tradition of newsboys who once stood on street corners yelling “Extra! Extra! Read All About It!” Although the corner newsboy is a relic of the past, in much of American they still deliver the paper every day carrying their papers in the familiar newspaper delivery bag without any thought to the tradition they are continuing, or the part they play in securing American liberties.
Also in the area: To the north is Mt. Greylock in Adams, home to the War Memorial Beacon and one of the best riding roads in New England with sweeping lines and hairpin curves.
Heading south, you'll find the town of Stockbridge, home to the Guthrie Center (and the town that inspired his classic Alice’s Restaurant) and the scenic Berkshires where you’ll find scenic riding as good as it gets in New England.
A short trip east will take you to Springfield, home of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site the primary manufacturing center for military arms in the United States from 1777 until 1968 and home of the world’s largest collection of historic firearms.
