USCGC Taney is a high endurance cutter built for the Coast Guard in the Mid-1930s. Taney was originally designed for peacetime missions of law enforcement, search and rescue, and maritime patrol. Until the outbreak of WWII, she was home ported in Honolulu, Hawaii, engaged in opium interdiction and search & rescue missions. The Taney was attached to Destroyer Division 80 in the summer of 1941 and was in action against Japanese planes during the Pearl Harbor attack, firing on Japanese planes overflying the city. Of the 101 U.S. fighting ships present in Hawaiian waters on 7 December 1941, Taney is the only one afloat today. Immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Taney carried out anti-submarine patrols and spent 80 of the first 90 days of the war at sea. The Taney saw action in both theaters of war (Pacific & Europe), Korea and Vietnam.
Although a ticket to the Maritime Museum is required to tour the ship (but also gets you tours of the U.S. Submarine Torsk, Light Ship Chesapeake and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse), you can view the exterior of the ship via East Pratt Street at the end of Pier 4 near the Hard Rock Cafe.
Also in the area: If you're a baseball stadium collector, Camden Yards is just a mile to the west. Fort McHenry is across the harbor and the USS Constellation, the last all-sail ship in the US Navy is also docked nearby and open for tours. Edgar Allen Poe’s grave in Westminster Hall Cemetery is a quiet spot.
Baltimore is a foodie's paradise! Steps away from the Martime Museum is Phillips Seafood Company, serving high-end crabcakes. If you're looking for awesome food at reasonable prices, try the Food Network-popular Blue Moon Cafe, serving a now-famous Captain Crunch French Toast, among other diner foods with a twist. BMC is open 24 hours on weekends.
