Originally erected in 1896 by renowned Civil War correspondent George Alfred Townsend to honor his fellow correspondents and artists killed in conflict, it became the National War Correspondents Memorial in 1904. The names of 157 correspondents and artists from both the North and South who reported in words and pictures on the Civil War were originally inscribed in tablets on the monument.
More recently, the names of four correspondents killed while on assignment covering the War on Terror were added, Daniel Pearl killed in Pakistan; and Elizabeth Neuffer, Michael Kelly and David Bloom killed in Iraq. They are

Also in the area: Burkittsville is famous as the setting for the Blair Witch Project movie, and features attractions related to the movie’s theme.
The town was also in the middle of two battles of the Civil War – Crampton’s Gap and Antietam with many houses remaining just as they were 150 years ago; a walking tour is recommended for the history buff.
