Although military chaplains are generally not stationed on the front lines, they do often come in harm’s way. Four army chaplains made the supreme sacrifice on 3 February 1943 when the transport they were aboard was attacked by a German U-boat. The transport ship Dorchester was hit amidships by a torpedo that disabled the ship. Taking on water, the captain gave the order to abandon ship and the four chaplains helped hand out life vests to servicemen about to jump into the sea to await rescue. When they ran out of life vests, the chaplains gave up their own so that four other men could be saved.

As the Dorchester slipped under the icy waters, the four men, locked arm in arm, went under as well. Despite being men of peace, George Fox a Methodist Minister, Clark Poling a Dutch Reform Minister, Alexander Goode a Jewish Rabbi and John Washington a Roman Catholic Priest, together gave their lives in war so that others could live. True heros.

Also in the area: In nearby Salisbury, the Evolution Craft Brewing Company serves up fresh local brewed craft beers and excellent pub food, including crabcakes.
