Passing through the New Park on the grounds of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, it would be easy to be drawn in by the conning tower of the USS Grayling rising out of the park’s grass. Or distracted by the massive sail of the cargo class submarine the USS Sailfish in Shipyard Mall (the “old park”) across the street.
But proceeding down the brick walkway past the Grayling (the 2nd to last submarine built by the shipyard) will lead to this unique memorial to the shipyard’s civilian workforce who sacrificed to build the ships and submarines that helped win WWII and subsequently the Cold War.
Note, The Shipyard is on Seavey Island north of the New Hampshire border in the Piscataqua River. Visitors will need to identify themselves at the shipyard’s entrance gate south of the Stoddard Street Bridge to obtain a yard pass. As with other military bases; helmets, gloves, and boots are required while riding on the shipyard’s property.
Also in the area: The infamous Kittery Outlets or Kittery Trading Post is a well-advised stop to pick up something for those who wait at home while we pursue our riding passions. :-)
The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse can provide another stop for Lighthouse Tour riders.
For those who like ziplines, Take Flight Aerial Adventure is Maine’s first and largest (and only) zipline tour.
