The US Army Coast Artillery Corp was charged with the defense of the United States coast and harbors. Specialists in the operation of fixed heavy artillery, the CAC also was responsible for mine laying operations in the harbors they defended.
Fort Preble in Portland started as a temporary fort during the American Revolution (known then as Fort Hancock) but with President Jefferson’s coastal defense initiatives it was built up as a permanent fort beginning in 1808. For the next 150 years it guarded the entrance to Portland Harbor until it was decommissioned in 1950.
