Also known as the Monument to the Struggle Against World Terrorism, this 100 -foot steel sculpture by Zurab Tserteli, the President of the Russian Academy of Art,was donated by the people of Russia to the United States as a memorial to the victims of terrorist attacks.
The tower features a 40-foot stainless steel teardrop hanging in a fissure in the tower’s center and is made of metal recovered from a Russian military aircraft factory. The 11-sided granite base is inscribed with the names of the victims of the 9-11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing. A nearby marker features a photo of the Tear of Grief Monument with New York City in the background. The site where the World Trade Center once stood is outlined in the picture.
Also in the area: The Bayonne Bridge, connecting Bayonne with Staten Island, is one of the longest arched steel bridges in the world and is alone a sight worth seeing.
Although all of the sights and attractions of New York City are only a short ride away, Bayonne has attractions of its own including the Brennan Fire Museum in the former 47th Street Firehouse, or the Robbins Reef Light Station on the West Side Main Channel.
