Located in the Ulysses S Wiggins Waterfront Park, just steps away from the battleship USS New Jersey, this memorial recognizes the U. S. Merchant Marine who faced submarines, ships, enemy aircraft and the hazards of weather while transporting 85% of the men and supplies for the allied war effort during WWII.
The seamen of the merchant marine were all volunteers, ranging in age from 16 to 78 with many deemed “unfit for service” in the active military. Protected only by the guns of the U. S. Navy Armed Guard who accompanied them aboard their ships, the Merchant Marine suffered more loss of life as a percentage of the force than any branch of the armed services. When they returned they were not considered veterans so lost out on the benefits accorded to those they served with and transported through hostile waters. Finally in 1988 the Merchant Marine were finally recognized for their contribution to the war effort through recognition by the U. S. Government of their status as Veterans of military service.
Also in the area: Without a doubt, a tour of America's most decorated battleship, the Battleship New Jersey, is in order.
A quick hop over the river brings you to cheesesteak country. Are the best sandwiches at Jim's in West Philly? At Geno's, or at Pat's? In order, those are the choices of your region sponsor, Jim Hatch, but you make your own decision.
