A larger-than-life bronze soldier stands on a high granite base pensively reflects on the War to End All Wars. Disheveled and torn, he returns from battle worn and weary but unbowed. He stands to honor the memory of the citizens of East Providence who served in the World War whose 23 names are inscribed on a plaque on the base. Erected in 1927 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, this memorial is a silent sentinel honoring those who served.

Also in the area: Providence is home to the birthplace of the classic American Diner. In 1872 Walter Scott sold sandwiches and coffee from a horse-drawn wagon outside the Providence Journal. Today, the tradition is carried on by the Haven Brothers’ 1949 diner car which is parked in front of City Hall from 4:30pm until 5:00am. It's worthy of a stop for the “plumpiest hot dog,” or Rhode Island’s unique milkshake, the Coffee Cabinet.
