This quiet corner of Rhode Island, due to its location on Conanicut Island in the Narragansett Bay, accessible only by bridge or boat, Jamestown is home to some scenic rides and unique sights. Among these is one of the only memorials to the Indian Wars in New England in Jamestown. An obelisk memorializes all “wars and conflicts” of American history with individual markers for each of the nine up to Vietnam at its base.
Jamestown is also home to the somewhat difficult to find Daughters of the American Revolution Memorial in a field off Beavertail Road (41.48251,-71.38935), and Fort Getty which is similar in design but not nearly as well preserved as Newport’s Fort Adams.
The island is lightly trafficked outside of downtown and provides an incredible opportunity for island riding in the heart of Rhode Island.
Also in the area: Trattoria Simpatico is just the place for dinner right up the street from the Jamestown Memorial, Fort Getty and rural island roads are just the ticket for an afternoon’s ride.
Afterwards, take a ride over the Clairborne Pell Newport Bridge whose towers soar 400 ft above the bay and more than 2 miles long making it the longest suspension bridge in New England.
